What is Durood Sharif?

In Arabic, this act is called Salawat (plural of salat) for the Prophet ﷺ.

Hadith About Durood
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him ten times.”

“The closest people to me on the Day of Judgment will be those who used to send the most blessings upon me.”

“Send a lot of blessings upon me on Fridays.”

This is recited in daily prayers:
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ
Translation
“O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious…”
Short Durood (Easy for Frequent Use)
صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ
(Sallallahu ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam)
Meaning: “Peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad.”
This short form can be recited throughout the day with ease.
When to Recite Durood Sharif
You can recite it anytime, but some times are more recommended:
- After hearing or saying the Prophet’s name
- During and after Salah
- During du’a
- On Fridays (the most blessed day)
