Virtues of Surah Al-Waqi’ah

This Surah holds great virtue. Whoever recites it at night, will never suffer from poverty. You may teach it to your children and household as well.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqi’ah at night, he will never face poverty ever.”

Hazrat Uthman (رضی اللہ عنہ) instructed Hazrat Ibn Mas’ud (رضی اللہ عنہ) to be given some allowance for his daughters.
Upon this, Hazrat Ibn Mas’ud (رضی اللہ عنہ) said: “Do you think my daughters will face poverty? I have instructed them to regularly recite Surah Al-Waqi’ah, as I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that whoever recites this Surah every night will never face poverty.”

The Main Theme: The Day of Judgment

Surah Waqia opens with the statement of the “inevitable event” (Al-Waqiah), referring to the Day of Judgment. The Surah vividly illustrates how the universe will collapse and transform on that day:

“When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake, and the earth discharges its burdens” (56:4-5).

This description is meant to remind humanity of the ultimate power and authority of Allah over the cosmos and our final end. The Surah moves forward to describe three distinct groups of people, who will be separated based on their deeds:

  1. The Foremost (As-Sabiqoon): These are the individuals who excelled in faith and deeds, earning the highest place in Paradise.
  2. The People of the Right (Ashab al-Yameen): The righteous who will be rewarded with a place in Paradise but at a level lower than the foremost.
  3. The People of the Left (Ashab al-Shimal): Those who are destined for punishment in Hell due to their disobedience to Allah.

Surah Waqiah’s Depiction of Paradise and Hell

The descriptions of both Paradise (Jannah) and Hell (Jahannam) in surat Waqiah are striking and vivid, intended to stir reflection and contemplation about one’s own actions and their eventual outcomes.

The People of the Right:

“They will be amid thornless lote trees, clusters of bananas, extended shade, flowing water, abundant fruit—never out of season nor forbidden—and elevated furnishings” (56:28-33).

These believers will experience endless bliss and comfort. Allah promises them eternal happiness, surrounded by shade, fresh fruit, and constant companionship with their loved ones. The imagery here highlights the perfection of the reward for those who have lived righteously.

The Foremost:

“And the foremost in faith will be the foremost in Paradise. They are the ones nearest to Allah” (56:10-12).

This group is closest to Allah, granted the highest rewards in Paradise. The Surah speaks of a paradise filled with fruits, meats, and beautiful companions who are like “pristine pearls” (56:22-24). Their closeness to Allah represents the ultimate reward for their sincere devotion and extra acts of worship beyond the obligatory.

The People of the Left:

“They will be in scorching heat and boiling water, in the shade of black smoke, neither cool nor refreshing” (56:42-44).

This group faces a grim fate, described as a punishment of extreme heat, suffocating smoke, and boiling liquids. Their past life of indulgence and sin without repentance or faith in Allah leads them to this inescapable end.
