Hajj Ifrad

Hajj al-Ifrad (حج الإفراد) is one of the three valid methods of performing the Hajj pilgrimage. The term “Ifrad” means “to single out”, as this method involves performing only Hajj, without combining it with Umrah.

Unlike Tamattu’ or Qiran, this type of Hajj does not require a sacrificial animal, making it more accessible and simple in its process.

What is Hajj al-Ifrad?

In Hajj al-Ifrad, the pilgrim:

  • Makes intention only for Hajj (not Umrah) at the Miqat
  • Remains in Ihram from the beginning until after all the major Hajj rites are complete
  • Does not perform Umrah during the same trip
  • No animal sacrifice is required (though it is recommended)

The pilgrim who performs this type is called a Mufrid.

Who Should Choose Hajj al-Ifrad?

Hajj al-Ifrad is typically chosen by:

  • Residents of Makkah, as per many scholars
  • Pilgrims who arrive late and cannot perform Umrah beforehand
  • Those who want to perform Hajj alone, without the extra rituals of Umrah
  • People seeking a simpler, sacrifice-free form of Hajj

Step-by-Step Guide to Hajj al-Ifrad

Enter Ihram and Make Niyyah

  • At the Miqat, declare intention for Hajj only: “Labbayka Hajj” (Here I am, O Allah, for Hajj)
  • Enter into Ihram and follow its restrictions (no perfume, cutting hair/nails, etc.)

Proceed to Makkah

  • Perform Tawaf al-Qudum (welcome Tawaf) upon entering Makkah
  • Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah (some delay this until after Tawaf al-Ifadah)

Remain in Ihram

  • Unlike Tamattu’, you stay in Ihram and do not trim or shave hair
  • Stay in Ihram until after the major Hajj rituals

Perform the Rites of Hajj (8–13 Dhul Hijjah)

  • On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah:
    • Proceed to Mina, spend the night
  • On the 9th, go to Arafat, the most important pillar of Hajj
  • After sunset, proceed to Muzdalifah, collect pebbles, stay overnight
  • On the 10th:
    • Perform Ramy al-Jamarat (stoning of the devil)
    • Shave or trim hair
    • Tawaf al-Ifadah and possibly Sa’i (if not done earlier)

Final Days (11–13 Dhul Hijjah)

  • Continue stoning the Jamarat each day
  • Complete Tawaf al-Wada’ (farewell Tawaf) before leaving Makkah
