Hajj Qiran

Hajj al-Qiran (حج القِران) is one of the three valid methods of performing Hajj. The word Qiran comes from the Arabic root Qarana, meaning “to combine” or “to join.” As the name suggests, this type of Hajj involves performing both Umrah and Hajj together, in one continuous Ihram and a single journey.

This method of Hajj is more demanding than Tamattu’, but it holds immense reward and spiritual value.

What is Hajj al-Qiran?

In Hajj Qiran, the pilgrim:

  • Makes intention (niyyah) for both Umrah and Hajj at the Miqat (boundary point)
  • Remains in the state of Ihram throughout, until both Umrah and Hajj are complete
  • Performs Tawaf and Sa’i once for Umrah, and then again (according to some scholars) during Hajj
  • Is required to offer a sacrificial animal (Hady)

The person performing this form of Hajj is known as a Qarin.

Who Chooses Hajj al-Qiran?

This method is ideal for:

  • Pilgrims bringing their own animals for sacrifice (as done in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ)
  • Those wanting to combine both Umrah and Hajj without exiting Ihram
  • People arriving close to the days of Hajj, making it difficult to do a separate Umrah and Hajj

Step-by-Step Guide to Hajj al-Qiran

Ihram and Niyyah

  • At Miqat, make intention for both Umrah and Hajj
  • Say: “Labbayka ‘Umrah wa Hajj”
(I respond to Your call for Umrah and Hajj)

Perform Umrah

  • Upon arrival in Makkah:
    • Perform Tawaf of Kaaba (Tawaf al-Qudum)
    • Perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah (can count for both Umrah and Hajj depending on school of thought)
  • Do not shave or trim hair after Umrah
  • Remain in Ihram—you cannot remove it until Hajj is complete

Wait for Hajj

  • Stay in Ihram and prepare spiritually for Hajj
  • Continue observing all restrictions (no cutting hair, nails, using perfume, etc.)

Perform Hajj Rituals (8–13 Dhul Hijjah)

  • On 8th Dhul Hijjah (Yawm al-Tarwiyah), begin Hajj rites:
    • Go to Mina, spend the night
    • Stand at Arafat on the 9th
    • Stay at Muzdalifah
    • Perform Ramy al-Jamarat (stoning), animal sacrifice, Tawaf al-Ifadah, Sa’i (if not done before), and shaving/trimming hair
  • After these rites, you may exit Ihram

Hajj al-Qiran is deeply rooted in Prophetic practice. It requires patience and devotion, as you remain in Ihram for a longer period. Yet, it also mirrors the Hajj of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who performed Qiran during his Farewell Pilgrimage.

For those physically and mentally prepared for this commitment, it is a highly rewarding spiritual journey — combining two great acts of worship into one blessed mission.

May Allah accept your Hajj and grant you a journey of purification and nearness to Him. Ameen.
